Use Link Building To Improve Website
For anyone starting an Internet business getting familiar with link building is a necessity for your sites success. Links building is another way for Google and your customers to navigate the different pages of your site. You can use links as a way to guide your customers to other relevant content or it can be used to take customers to product pages.
The links I talk about here are built into the content of your posts and pages. You’ll see them frequently highlighted in red on this site, the shades may be different on other sites, but there still links.
Link Building Improves Your Website
You’ll hear time and time again the words Links and Keywords, remember these terms. If there’s any part of your Internet business you want to study it’s these two.
Web pages without links is like an island that no one knows about. You could have the best looking site, the best products and the best prices, but if your not connected who knows your there.
There are a ton of link building strategies and many are good, consider this an ongoing process for improvement. The thing that Google likes to see is a natural progression. This means links are relevant to other pages within your site. It also means links are relevant from your site to other sites.
The sites linking to another don’t have to be the exact same subject, but they have to be related to some reasonable topic so both the reader and Google can make sense of it.
If your site is about apples and you link to a site about dune buggies, well your visitor leaves shaking their head. One Big key factor when link building is trying to link your keyword(s). For example one keyword of this posting is “link building improve website” and when I say keyword it can be one word or a phrase, this is called Long Tailed Keywords.
I don’t want to get to much into keywords, but it’s important you know how they are used with linking.
The other pre-caution is overuse of links. Once you understand the role of this process it’s easy to get carried away an have a link in every other sentence. Overuse will cause your site penalties and kill the rankings in Googles search results. The rule of thumb I see that’s common is 3 to 5 links per 1000 words. If you have to add an extra one here or there so a visitor can see something important, it’s not a problem.
Broken Links – Companies go out of business, website change formats, any number of things change. A broken link is worse than no link at all. To the search engine this reflects poor site maintenance. You could be penalized over time, there is software to help or you can periodically check it yourself.
The main culprits are your outbound links to other sites.
Types of Links Used in the Link Building Plan
I know this sounds like a lot of stuff to digest, but it’s vital to your Internet business for success. Link building, without a doubt, will improve your websites standing and increase traffic.
There are three types of links:
- Internal
- Outbound
- Inbound (backlinks)
The two you control are internal and outbound. The most likely to be broken are the outbound links. When I start a new site I map everything out on paper first. Then I build it and add my internal linking. Next are the outbound links. Be sure your hooking up with a good site, your customer is trusting you for guidance. If you send them to a lousy site you can probably kiss them goodbye.
When I first started in this business I bought a book called The SEO Bible, it was like reading a foreign language. I can tell you looking back, if I would have learned keywords and linking first, I’d be way ahead of where I am today. That’s how important this is to your business.
It’s important to Google so they know where to go and who thinks your site is important enough to link to (backlinks). For your customers it’s a guide to other information they otherwise wouldn’t find and it’s your opportunity to guide them to places you want them to go.
Backlinks – These are links coming from other sites into yours. The control of these links belongs to other site owners. There are both good and bad sites that can link to yours, Google knows the difference. The only time they will penalize you is if you link back to a bad site. By you doing this you give approval, in Googles eyes, to this bad site.
Let me list some of the more popular ways to get backlinks:
- Article Marketing
- Hubpages
- Squidoo
- Blog Directories
- Bookmarking
- Commenting
- Guest Post Writing
- And writing web owners that you think your site would benefit.
Again, Google wants to see natural link building. Flooding hundreds of links a day into your site is not natural.
Try not to use Click Here to direct your customer, use the keyword when possible.
Link building is like building muscles, it’s an ongoing process to gain strength. In this case your building the strength of your site and business.

March 16th, 2010 at 11:07 pmBacklinking can become a precious benefit and facilitate with off site search engine optimisation. Have you ever seen links cause a negative outcome to rankings? And do you know if there is a way to reveal when paying per click is better than search engine optimization? I myself manage dozens websites and as a matter of fact operate a link building service.
