How To Start An Internet Business – Step 1

If you already know or your still thinking about starting an Internet business this overview is worth reading. Many people get the wrong impression about the Internet business, the most common is it’s quick, easy money. That’s why this business has a high turnover rate.

The Different Advertisements on How to Start an Internet Business

We all have seen the infomercials “Will give you 10 Free websites, start making 10K a month” here are the questions you should ask.

  1. What do I do with those sites?
  2. How do I get traffic?
  3. How do I make money?
  4. What do I do if the site doesn’t work?

I get hundreds of emails a day, a good bunch of these are from people I subscribed to. Every Internet marketer has some kind of product that tells you How to run an Internet Business. Lets look at a few.

  • How to pay your bills off right away
  • 30K a month from 15 minuets of work a day, really…
  • Here’s how I make 1k every day
  • Make 20k within 30 days

You get the point, actually the intros are not as bad as they use to be. The question is “what does it really take to start this business and how do you do it?”

A site has to be hosted, you need a domain name, do you know the various methods to get traffic to your site? If someone buys something how do you get paid? Where do you go if you want to add to the site or something stops working?

These are the holes that are intentionally left out in the initial sale of these types of programs. You ask why? Easy answer, so they can sell you the information to plug the holes. That information is priced a lot higher than the initial $39.95 you paid for the original offer.

As mentioned in starting an Internet business front page, the parts of the business most important to you are Keywords, Traffic and Conversion.

The next 3 steps of the overview will focus on:

  1. What Type of Internet business do you want to start (where do you fit?)
  2. What Tools are needed
  3. How do you monetize (make money)

As mentioned before, understanding how to start an Internet business correctly will increase your chances for long term success.

One part of the business is Selling

Don’t let anyone fool you, to make big bucks online you need to sell, you might as well get use to this word early on sell, sell, sell.

The Internet is a little different though, it’s not the traditional form of face to face selling, I hate that too, it’s electronic marketing type of selling. Your still providing a product, service or information to the customer, it’s the platform that’s different. It’s much harder to sell food over the Internet compared to an Ebook.

If your using a site to sell advertising such as adsense, you need to write in a way that people desire more information. If your selling health products you need to be informative to the point a visitor sees the benefits of your product.

To make money online you don’t need to be pushy, but you do need to be persistent. In the beginning you need to learn the basics, along the way you must learn how to sell. There are words like marketing and promoting to soften the word Sell for people who don’t like it, but you have to make sales to make money online.

Your motives can still stay pure, you can continue to inform and help people solve problems, but to be a viable business you have to Sell and make profits.

There is no doubt Bigg Bucks are being made online, but starting and building your business is not about Bigg Bucks at this point, it’s about understanding how and what you want to do with this type of business.

At this point let me emphasize something, I’ve been through programs that throw all sorts of information at you, you get confused and frustrated. I want to take small necessary parts, ration them out and let you digest it.

If you consume all sorts of foods at the same time what would you get? Indigestion right, we don’t want that to happen, take small portions digest it, understand it and move on to the next step.

Start Your Own Internet Business

When you start your own business it’s not just building a business, your building VRE (Virtual Real Estate). That’s right, your efforts could very well turn into BiGG Bucks down the road. One may not think in terms of Myspace or Facebook, but sites selling in the millions is not uncommon as more people recognize Internet Property as investments.

Internet Business – Good Points

  • Start-up Costs Minimal
  • Work From Home
  • Low To No Overhead
  • Tax Benefits
  • Passive Income
  • Flexible Work Time
  • Your The Owner

I’m sure you have your own personal reasons which could be added to this list, whatever motivates you is what’s important. Now for the other side of the coin.

Internet Business – Not So Good Points

  • Lots Of Competition
  • Easy To Lose Focus
  • You Need Discipline
  • Avoid Distractions
  • Motivate Yourself

As you can see, on the flip side it’s all about staying on track. Like any business you need a plan, a map, a routine to follow that will get you to the next step.

When working for someone your motivation is a paycheck and keeping a job,  when you start your own Internet business you have to motivate yourself. This is sometimes harder than it sounds. Just keep these things in mind.

Success And Quit Rates

When you look around you read two numbers about people starting an Internet business, 7% continue and build a business and 93% quit. This is not uncommon for any business and for this business especially, I believe I know why, expectations.

A lot of the advertising hypes the fast big bucks, when it doesn’t happen people drop out, simple as that. Now would you expect someone advertising a line like this “Make Big Money On The Internet” to say “this is a rough business, you have little chance to make it, but buy my product anyway for $37.00 even though the odds are against you”.  No, of course not you’re only going to get the juicy part of the ad.

Here’s a good example, at walgreens they were selling a half gallon of something similar to sobe iced tea and it was on sale for $3.00, great price. On the label in big type it said “Made with Green Tea – A Great Antioxidant” for $3.00 this sounds great, it has green tea it should be healthy too.

Go home and read the small print of ingredients, it’s 1% green tea, they weren’t lying but they were really stretching the truth. The point is you have to look at all the ingredients to get the right picture, this way the percentages for success will be much higher for you.

What Kind Of Information Will Your Internet Business Deliver?

Like me, I bet you want good information. Let me explain how I classify information.

I already told you the Internet is prime for giving and selling information, it’s also good for products and service too, but information is the big seller. Here’s the way I see it:

  • Junk – poor spelling, bad grammar, just sloppy hard to read junk.
  • Poor – rehashed stuff copied from a million other sites.
  • Good – well written, easy to read, useful content, honest content
  • Better – more detailed information, sold as a product.
  • Best – this information is reserved to top end products, expect to pay more for this information

It’s simple, to get any attention and creditability you need to provide good information. To make money you build on the good information by recommending things to your customers and monetizing the better and best info later.

Finally, before we move on lets answer the question, if there are several sites that have good information why would someone view yours over some elses? Good question, it could be by accident, it might be your style of delivering information, your personality, a referral or luck, these are the X-factors of marketing.

News stations all report the same crap each night, why is one station more watched than the others? Same reasons, you give good content and you will get your share too.

How you plan and start your business will determine how successful it will be. Of course you’ll make changes along the way, but a good foundation makes for a good start.

Lets move on to step 2, what type of Internet business models fits you.
